Corydalidae
The Corydalidae are a family of large insects belonging to the order Megaloptera. They are best known for two distinctive groups: dobsonflies and fishflies.
The family is divided into two subfamilies:
Corydalinae – the dobsonflies, characterized by males that often possess extremely elongated mandibles, used primarily for courtship and competition rather than feeding.
Chauliodinae – the fishflies, whose males have normal-sized mandibles and are generally more robust in appearance.
The aquatic larvae of both groups are important predators in clean streams and rivers, where they play a significant role in freshwater ecosystems. Because they require well-oxygenated water, they are often considered good indicators of water quality.
Adults are typically active during the evening and are attracted to lights. Although they may appear intimidating, especially the large male dobsonflies, they are generally harmless to humans.
